Reflections

Reflection 1

Today I started my cover by listening to the song and thinking about what I could change. I have decided to change the duration to make it slower and I'm changing the structure.

I am also changing the instrumentation of the song.

Violin=Melody

Guitar= Bassline

Electric Piano= Harmony

Percussion=Rhythm

Here is my planning.

Structure- intro, verse 1, pre-chorus, chorus, outro

Original tempo- 88bpm New tempo- 65bpm

Reflection 2

Today I went a bit further in my planning and planned out what key I was going to play the song in. I've decided to keep it the same as the original, Bb minor (B flat minor).

I have decided to make my cover slower for a cooler calmer finish.

I also graphically planned out my song and decided where everything is going to go.

Reflection 4

Today notated the violin melody for verse 1, pre-chorus and chorus. I also attempted to record it, but I couldn't get a quiet moment so my recording had heaps of background noise. So in the meantime, I'm just going to practice it then record it later. I have also remembered that Bb minor is a hard key to get perfect on the violin. When playing in this key, you have to get each note perfect otherwise it will sound very wacky.

Here is a bit of graphic notation that helped me notate on note flight. -->

I've also linked a youtube video below that I felt inspired by.

Reflection 3

Today I finished notating my bassline and I started recording my cover on garage band. I found this website that had the bassline in tab form so I decide to use that but change it up a bit. I used an acoustic guitar to record the bassline. The bassline only starts in the pre-chorus so I will have to move it when I add another track on garage band. Note: Ask Miss Bergeson if I'm allowed to have tab notation on my score.

Reflection 5

Today I notated the keyboard part of my cover. This was a bit of a challenge because I've only just started learning the piano. But I still managed to successfully notate in on note flight.

The keyboard part has the longest role and plays throughout the whole piece. In the keyboard part, I added my own little intro and outro, something that's not featured in the original song.

When recording this, the sound quality wasn't that great, but I had a chat with Miss Bergerson and she gave me some sweet tips. On GarageBand, you can use cool echo effects found in the library section. She also said not to worry too much about sound quality.

After recording the keyboard part, I fit it in with the bassline and had a listen. So far I'm proud of my progress and I'm really enjoying this task.

You can have a listen to my current recording below.

Reflection 6

Today I finally got to record my violin part. I feel like this was definitely the hardest part to record. Not because it was hard to play, but because it was hard to finally settle on which recording sounded the best and if I had to redo it. I didn't record my violin track directly onto garage band, instead, I recorded the parts separately (verse, chorus, pre-chorus) through a recording app on my laptop. Unfortunately, this app made my violin sound robotic and it sped up my recording but I managed to make it work as I didn't have time to re-record.

Reflection 7

Today is my final reflection. Today I pretty much just tidied up my website, finished my comparative analysis and uploaded my final audio.

This assignment has been an amazing journey and I feel like I've learnt so much. I'm really glad to have been able to do this assignment and overall really enjoyed it.

I would also like to thank you Miss Bergeson, as you were so supportive and helpful during this whole assignment. I hope you like my cover. 😊
