Somethings got a hold On Me

A group assignment by Ally, Mary, Strahan, Aden, Mia & Ezra

In this Assignment, we performed a cover of the rock song "Somethings Got a Hold on Me" by Etta James.

You can see our final result below.

The Journey

Week 4:

Our first group meeting! We have decided on a song. We will be playing Somethings Got a Hold on Me by Etta James. We will be putting the key up a semitone to C Major as it will be easier to play.

We have also decided on our instrumentation.

Aden will be playing the saxophone, Mia will be on vocals and electric guitar, Mary will be on vocals and maybe some piano,  Strahan will be on the double bass, Ezra will be on the drums, and me(Ally) will be playing the violin.

Week 5:

During our rehearsal this week we discussed the structure of the song. We have decided to keep the structure the same as the original song. The structure is the intro, verse1, chorus, verse 2,  chorus, verse 3, chorus and outro.

We have also had a COVID update from the government. Unfortunately, if we choose to record in school, we can only have 1 vocalist and/or brass instrument.

However, we have an option. If we choose to record everyone separately at someone's house, we can have more that one vocalist and/or brass instrument.

So we have decided to record at Mary's house in week 7 with the help of her dad.

This way we aren't restricted by COVID rules.

Week 6:

We rehearsed a couple of times this week during lessons as well as during lunch and recess. Our rehearsals are going well and we have successfully navigated our way through the entire song and we all know what we are doing.

We also took a recording so we could listen to how we sounded. Our recording is below:

From this recording, we made a couple of corrections and changes, like when to cut off during the intro, and some variations in rhythm throughout the song.

Week 7:

We were a little underrehearsed but thanks to the cool technology and recording everyone separately, we got by really well.

We also had to change our instrumentation a bit as well as we were a bit limited with instruments.

We started by recording Ezra on the Cajon. We were originally going to have Ezra on the drums but we were a little limited with resources so we used the Cajon. He went really well and put down the foundations for the rest of the song.

Next, we recorded Strahan on the bass guitar. Unfortunately, Strahan had learnt his part on the double bass prior to our recording session, so he didn't know what he was doing. But with a little help from Mary's dad and a lot of practice, he got the hang of it and recorded successfully.

We then recorded Mia on the electric guitar. This went really well. In fact, I'm pretty sure Mia got her recording done first try!

After Mia, it was my turn on the violin. I was a little nervous recording, but after a few tries, we got the perfect recording.

Next, it was Adens turn on the saxophone. I wasn't there to see him but from what I heard and the final result, it went very well!

With all our instrument recorded, it was finally Mary's turn on the lead vocals. She absolutely killed it!!

After this, we added a couple of extra things like clapping and backing vocals.

And with all the recording done, it was time for the music video. I wasn't there but I can tell from the music video that they had so much fun doing this! 😂

This assignment was so fun and I really enjoyed collaborating with everyone!
